Going Through the Era's // Matinee Saturday {1960s}

Now for the 60s I won't be able to list my favorite movies by the year. So I'll just list my favorite 60s movies along with either a picture or trailer,  some will have short movie clip too, and a short movie review of my thoughts on the film. Sound good? Good.

Please Don't Eat the Daisies {1960} starring Doris Day and David Niven. I love the title song, the cast, all the little boys, and of course, it has Doris Day & David Niven in it - which makes it simply stupendous!

Magnificent Seven {1960} starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn.... I only first saw this film for the first time last December, but it was an instant favorite. In fact, it might even be my favorite western film. The cast is first-rate. I could listen to the soundtrack all day. And I enjoy seeing the sub-acting that Brynner and McQueen do as they try to upstage each other - McQueen wins by a mile!

The Guns of Navarone {1961} starring Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn... If you are fan of The Dick Van Dyke Show you might remember that this is the film that Rob Petrie falls asleep to while watching it at a drive-in movie theater {how he did, I don't understand}. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat - it also keeps you guessing on who is the traitor within the group, and will they blow up the guns of Navarone?

The Great Escape {1963} starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, John Leyton... This *might* be my favorite 1960s World War II film. As you you have a whole prison camp filled with men who are always trying to escape, motorcycle chase scene, and an ending that you see coming but can't do anything about it.

Charade {1963} starring Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, James Coburn... This is one suspenseful film. If you scare easily, don't really watch this film at night Aas most of the suspenseful scenes take place at night around a hotel, elevator, train station, and the like... I might get scared easily but I love movie full of suspense. *laughs* Then there is Cary Grant character who is always changing his name. And don't get me started on Audrey Hepburn's wonderful wardrobe!

My Six Loves {1963} starring Debbie Reynolds, Cliff Robertson... A sweet story of a Broadway star who takes a vacation in the country and finds herself taking care of six abandoned children and falling in love. And since it stars Debbie Reynolds the movie is just adorable. Just a slight warning, this film is not out on DVD and the only place I've been able to locate it is on Youtube {you can watch it here}.

Lilies of the Field {1963} starring Sidney Poitier... Back-in-the-day when this film was in pre-production everyone thought this film was going to be flop so no one would back the film. So the director had to put his house up as collateral. Because they had a very tight budget, they had to film the movie in just 14 days. But what would you know, Poiter won in the 1964 Academy Award Best Actor for his role as Homer, making him the first African American man to win a Oscar {You can watch Sidney Poitier winning Best Actor on YouTube}.

The Sound of Music {1965} staring Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker... My list wouldn't be complete without this film. For us three older girls used to watch this movie so often, that for a time our parents had to ban us from watching it. But us being crazy Sound of Music fans, counted down the days until we could watch it again while we watched our other movies. *laughs* In fact, we love collecting stuff for the Sound of Music now days {both for the movie & 1959 Broadway Show}. We also enjoy Maria von Trapp's book, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

That Funny Feeling {1965} starring Bobby Darin, Sandra Dee, Donald O'Connor, Nita Talbot... Joan Howell {Sandra Dee}, a maid-for-hire and actress on the side, keeps bumping into Tom Milford {Bobby Darin}, a wealthy New York businessman, while going around town. They finally decide to go out on a date after they keep bumping into each other. After the date Tom wants to escort Joan back to her place. But Joan is embarrassed of tiny apartment that she shares, so she takes him to one of the apartments she cleans saying it is her place - the catch is, she doesn't know that the owner of that apartment is in fact her date, Tom. He plays along with the charade, while not knowing who Joan really is. The movie then follows all the crazy process of them finding out who each other really is.

Born Free {1966} staring Virginia McKenna, Bill Travers, Geoffrey Keen... I grew up watching this movie. It was one of the movies that we kids would watch all the time. It is hilarious, sad, exciting, and makes you all warm and fuzzy at the end. It may or may not of be part of the reason why I was fascinated about learning all I could about Kenya {even some of the language} when I was between the the ages of 8-11.

Silver Screen Blog Party Tag Questions

Day by Day
So, I wasn't going to do Natasha Marie's silver screen blog party {as I have so much going on already}. But then, I saw the questions AND then I HAD to do it. *grin*

t h e   q u e s t i o n s

{1}
It seems to be standard procedure for blog party questionnaires to begin by asking you to introduce yourself to the rest of the party goers. Far be it from me to be remiss in my duty, therefore, do tell us a bit about yourself, in as many or few words as you wish.

Well, my name is, Ashley and I'm twenty-one years old. I grew up watching old movies & TV shows. They are what really inspired me to sew and dress with a vintage touch. Besides watching movies I enjoy: fashion, blogging, baking & cooking big dinners, collecting old books & magazines, history, traveling, baseball, pinterest, and just hanging out with my family & friends.

{2}
What are a few of your favorite classic films?
Only a few? Well alright...{I narrowed down this list as much as I could...}

Share one of your favorite movie lines...
You see, boys forget what their country means by just reading The Land of the Free in history books. Then they get to be men they forget even more. Liberty's too precious a thing to be buried in books, Miss Saunders. Men should hold it up in front of them every single day of their lives and say: I'm free to think and to speak. My ancestors couldn't, I can, and my children will. Boys ought to grow up remembering that. - Jefferson Smith from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington {1939}

{5}
What is your opinion on remaking classic films?
If it was done in the 50s {Bachelor Mother/Bundle of Joy, It Happened One Night/You Can't Run Away from It, The Philadelphia Story/High Society} I don't mind. In fact, I rather enjoy those remakes better then the originals usually.

{6}
How about colorizing black and white films?
This is one thing I can't stand. I like my black and white films to stay b&w. Sorry to anyone who likes b&w films colorized.

{7}
Name a few of your favorite silver screen actresses.
Audrey Hepburn
Grace Kelly
Elizabeth Taylor
Lauren Bacall
Deanna Durbin
June Allyson
Ginger Rogers
Eva Marie Saint
Debbie Reynolds
Sandra Dee
Doris Day

{8}
Now a few of your favorite actors.
Cary Grant
Humphrey Bogart
Gregory Peck
Frank Sinatra
Steve McQueen
Jack Lemmon
James Stewart
Donald O'Connor
Peter Lawford
Montgomery Cliff
Dennis Morgan

{9}
Why are they your favorites?
Gosh. I just love their acting performances. For those that are dancers their dancing. And for those that sing, they are some of my favorite singers too.

{10}
Do you enjoy westerns? Why or why not?
Yes, I love western movies & TV shows. Why? I guess I just enjoy all of the cowboys. And The usual fight of good vs. bad and bringing justice to the land.

{11}
Are you a purist when it comes to adapting a book you love to the screen?
No, I'm usually not. for example: my favorite version of Pride & Prejudice is from {1940} and that is not at all like the book. I enjoy movies just as movies, and not as adaptions of books. But the one movie I wish was more like the book is Ben-Hur. As the book is simply lovely and has some wonderful life lessons in it {some that I think would be great to show in a film}.

{12}
Are there any film adaptations that you enjoyed more than the original book?
Alright, now I know most of my readers are Jane Austen fans and they are going to not like what I'm going to say. But, I enjoyed the 1940 version of Pride & Prejudice better then the book. {Here is a little secret...*whispers* my favorite Austen book/movie is Emma. I'm much more of an Elizabeth Gaskell fan than Jane Austen. *stops whispering*}

{13}
There are a lot of wonderful classic TV shows, but which one is your favorite?
Right now it is....let me think....between Wanted: Dead or Alive with Steve McQueen, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, The Donna Reed Show, and Daniel Boone. Alright, so I can't just pick one of anything. I can never pick just one.

{14}
After watching a musical, do you hum and singing snatches of the songs as you go about your day?
Guilty as charged. I'll sing/hum the songs for days, weeks, months, years....you get the picture. *grin*

{15}
Assuming the answer to the above is "yes", which song, without fail, get's stuck in your head?
Well, it isn't from a musical but the song Heidi sings in the Jean Simmons version of Heidi gets stuck in my head all the time. And I haven't seen the movie in like over ten years. But from a musical I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady, Well, Did You Evah! from High Society, and Sue Me from Guys & Dolls.

{16}
What's the corniest film you've ever seen?
I can't think of one right now.

What I Wore | Mixing Brown, Black, and Grey

What I'm Wearing: Black Chiffon Skirt c/o Sheinside // Grey & Lace Top F21 // Bomber Jacket Target // Flats Payless Shoes // Earrings F21 // Belt F21

Today's skirt was given to me by Sheinside to wear {I was able to pick out any thing I wanted. I've really been wanting a maxi black chiffon skirt. So that's what I picked out.}. The skirt took awhile to get here, it came from Asia, but it was worth the wait. It is beautiful, fits well, stylish, and is comfy to wear. I've been seeing black maxi skirts with brown leather jackets, so I just had to try it out that combination for my first time wearing my skirt. {Oh, yes. This is what I really wore today.} Also, I should give y'all fair warning that you will be seeing pictures of me in my sunglasses from now, Lord willing it doesn't last longer, until sometime next week. As my right eye gets infect this time of year from terrible allergies and the bight sunlight hurts my eye, so that's why I'm always wearing the sunglasses now. {I could wear my glasses with the clip on sunglasses, but my glasses push on the area around my eye infection - not fun.}

Sheinside also has a 20% off coupon code for y'all. Just type in Ashley20 at checkout.

Also before I forget, I'm sponsoring a giveaway over at Beloved Star for your choice of headband from my Etsy shop.

Going Through the Era's // Fashionable Friday {1960s}

What I'm Wearing: Vintage Modern Jr. Gale & Gale Cocktail Dress {'66 - '69?} hand-me-down // Earrings LC Lauren Conrad for Kohls // Sunglasses Kohls // Black Pumps Famous Footwear

I love this dress. I just need a cocktail party, 1960s themed party, or a costume party to attended so I can wear this dress. *grin*

Since this dress is a juniors dress, and judging by the shorter length {though it could just because of my height} Gaby and I think this dress is from around 1966 to 1969. Does anyone have any ideas if this sounds right at all?

For this outfit I tried doing a '60s poof in my hair. But it didn't really turn out right with just using a curling iron, teasing, and hairspray. As my hair needs more lift on top {which could be achieved with some velcro rollers}.

Going Through the Era's // Baking Thursday {1960s}

Hello everyone! It is Gabrielle here doing today's baking from the 1960s post this evening. I found this recipe from one of Ashley's 1960s girl magazines. My youngest sister and I have made this twice since discovering the recipe in February, and would have made it more but we ran out of walnuts.... Which is also the reason why I don't have a picture. You can take my word though that it is absolutely delicious!

Cinnamon Nuts (California) c. 1960

2 cups of walnuts halves (you can also do almonds or a mix)
1 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
5 tablespoons of water
1/8 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla

Combine the sugar, cinnamon, water and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over low heat and boil 5 minutes. Add vanilla. Stir in nuts until the mixture is thick and nuts thoroughly covered. Remove from heat and turn out on wax paper. Separate the nuts. When cool, store in tightly covered container.

I'm not sure how long it will last, we eat them too fast to know. The aroma while baking is like a state fair or baseball game as you pass the nut stand. Hmm, delicious! I hope y'all enjoy the recipe.

What I Wore - Summer Wind

What I'm Wearing: Pleated Polka-Dot Skirt F21 // Refashioned Blouse GAP Kids // Necklace F21 // Vintage inspired Earrings Claire's // Black Pumps Famous Footwear

Jessica via What I Wore
Today's outfit started out with a skirt I saw that Jessica of What I Wore had bought at Ruche. I immediately fell in love with the skirt. But I wasn't willing to pay how much they wanted {plus I wasn't sure how the length would work for me}. So when I found this skirt at Forever21.com for cheaper I bought it.  I love this skirt and can't wait to dress it up for church and work and dress it down for a more casual look. Originally, I was going to wear a white v-neck tee with the skirt today. But once I saw this blouse hanging in my closet, I decided to go with the more the early '60s vibe with this outfit. *grin*

I'm having a hard time deciding which '60s magazine to scan for tonight's post. So I'll ask y'all what you would like most to see tonight: 1960s American Girl magazine{s}, 1960s Hair Magazine, or pages from a 1960s Sears catalog? Or would you like random pages from all three?

What I Wore | Enchanted

What I'm Wearing: 1960s polka-dot dress hand-me-up {Gaby made it} // Pink Cardigan Old Navy // Belt F21 // Boots Target // Earring F21 // Ruffly Scarf Made by Me

Today's outfit is very girly-girl; I'm wearing a lot of pink. Only a few years ago I didn't really understand why girls were crazy about pink. Now, my tune has changed and I love pink. But I usually go for either the hot pinks or a light dusty pink. How do you feel about pink?

Tomorrow I'll be wearing a skirt that Jessica of What I Wore {who is one of my favorite fashion bloggers!} inspired me to buy {I found a cheaper version at F21}. Also you might just want to check out her blog in general as she is posting 1960s inspired outfits all this week. Yay!

Oh! Before I forget, it is time to announce the winner of the Cherry Bag. And the winner is.....Michaela! Congratulations, dear! I'll be in touch with you soon for your address.
