Secondhand Fashion Week - Day 3: Pink & Spice

Today is outfit was made from refashioned hand-me-downs. How neat is that?

My top was a hand-me-up (down) from Gabrielle, as the color didn't look good on her. I took the long-sleeved shirt and turned it into a ruffle t-shirt. I hope to have a tutorial on how to make this shirt latter this week.

My skirt was originally a pair of pants that were given to me (hand-me-down). I wore them as pants until last Fall, when I was starting to get a little tired of them, but I still loved the color and print. So I decided to turn them into a skirt. :) I also did this with a pair of jeans last Fall. See post here

Secondhand Fashion Week - Day 2

Today's look features one of my favorite skirts. In fact, I have worn it through all of my teen years - well, once I reach my 20th birthday this July. :^) What I love most about this skirt is the fullness. I love long and swirly skirts. And sometimes, I like to wear ballet shoes with this skirt while I go dancing through my day like a ballerina. ;-)

1940s "Swing" Dress - Pattern Review

Pattern: 1940s "Swing" Dress Pattern from Sense and Sensibility Patterns

Pattern Description: The dress has a unique yoke with gathered shoulders, two sleeve options (short and “bracelet-length”), and gored skirt.

Pattern Sizing: 8-26 (I made a 10)

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes!

Were the instructions easy to follow? Easy as pie once you figure out how to sew the shoulder seam. And if you make more than one dress. =)

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Nothing. I love all of Sense and Sensibility patterns. As a side note, this pattern is drafted for a long-waist-ed gal. This is no problem for me as I'm long-waist-ed. Makes it that much easier to sew for me. :)

Fabric Used: Simply Silky (polyester) from Joann Fabrics.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: Nope.

Would you sew it again? Yes!

Would you recommend it to others? Yes!

Ruffle Your T-Shirt

I've been pondering what to do for the Ruffle Your Stuff (and win) contest, and couldn't come up with something that was me. Then this weekend while I was browsing through some of my favorite sewing magazines, inspiration struck!  "Why not add a ruffle to one of my white tee shirts?" Mind you this was late at night, I pulled out my notions and some fabric scraps that caught my eye and piled them on top of the kitchen table.  I placed this and not on top of a shirt I had, trying to find something that caught my breath. Then this rose colored scrap grabbed me. I picked up my scissors and just started cutting. During this whole project I didn't pick up my measuring tape or ruler - I just used guess work. Thankfully it turned out. =)

Above is a before shot of the tee shirt. Besides adding a ruffle I changed the neckline as you can see above and below.  For referenced the neckline use to come up close to my neck and now it is much lower. In fact, I cut it a little too low for my taste so I just wear a tank underneath.

I also added ruffles to another shirt this weekend. I'll see if I can get pictures soon. =)

Mini Haul

I thought I would try something new. Doing haul posts on what I find and buy on sale, or on the clearance racks. I never buy anything full price. :) Like the idea? Yes? No? Tell me your thoughts.

Today I was at Kohls and they were having some good sales plus I had a 15% off my total purchase coupon. If you don't already, sign up for coupons to your favorite stores. They can help you save a lot of money.

The earrings I bought were buy one get the second pair free! So I picked up some post earrings, as I can't wear dangle ones for 6 months. :-( It was so hard finding post earrings that I like. But I finally decided on these two: Celtic knot and music clefs.

I also picked up a pair of sunglasses for $11. They were 50% off and I loved the fun color and stars on the side. :-)

The Little White Dress

You have all heard of the "Little Black Dress" right? Well, have you heard of the "Little White Dress? If not, you will this spring and hopefully summer, as the "Little White Dress" is to be in.

I'm so excited that white dresses are going to in this year! For I have always loved the white lawn dresses of the Edwardian era. For they were so graceful, feminine, romantic, and oh, so, dreamy. :)

You can go several routes for your own "Little White Dress." You can either buy or make your own dress. If you can sew, and love everything old-fashion may I recommend Mrs. Jennie Chancey's 1914 Afternoon Dress pattern (scroll down a bit). I've seen this pattern made both historical and modern. And both ways look lovely! You can see pictures of the historical way here. And a fellow blogger who made it modern over at Dreaming of Avonlea.

If you can't sew and want a more modern take here are some of my recommendations.

Beach Breeze Dress - J. Jill

Pure Jill Hooded Dress - J. Jill

Linen Knot-Front Dress - J. Jill

Valentine Ladies Dress - April Cornell

Chaps Swiss-Dot Dress - Kohls

The Traveler - Shabby Apple

Cap-Sleeve Dress (comes in white) - Newport News

Beda Dress - Anthropologie

I myself am planning on sewing my "Little White Dress." Haven't decided on the style yet, any ideas? :-)
