Wearing Skinny Jeans Modestly

Recently I was asked the following question in a comment on a recent post.
I really like the way you wear jeans with modesty and style. I have a hard time finding skinny jeans that, for modesty's sake, aren't actually skin tight on me- and still look good. Do you just have a lucky body type or do you have some tips to share?!
No, I don't have some special, or lucky body type that is able to wear skinny jeans modestly. I am a pear shaped meaning all of my weight goes to my hips and thighs. Which means, all the fashion books and magazines say I should avoid skinny jeans. They say that I will look best in either a trouser cut or bootcut {which I do agree with}, but I have found a couple ways to get away with wearing the skinny jean and modestly too.
Fit & Size

Now, I already struggle with finding pants/jeans that fit me the way I want them to in either the hips, thighs, or waist. But with skinny jeans it is even trickier. Since I don't want the jeans to fit like a second skin, I buy them in at least a size up from my correct size to fit my thighs, and to be "loose" and not skin-tight on me.

Let me give you some examples of how I fit skinny jeans from two different companies for me personally.

F21 Jeans

First off the skinny jeans from Forever 21, which was where I bought my first pair {since they are so cheap} to just try the style out. Since most of their jeans go by the waist measurement it makes it fairly easy to find the perfect size for you. For example: my waist is a size 28. So I buy a size 29 giving me a more looser fit. Except there is one thing that happens when you buy your jeans the next size up. You will have to wear a belt to keep your pants up, otherwise they might not stay up very well. Of course, after a year of washing the jeans they will have shrunk to a smaller size. Meaning I now mostly only wear my F21 pair under tunics, or with longer looser tops now and I don't longer need to wear a belt to help keep them up.

H&M Pants

Alright, I love my two pairs of H&M skinny jeans/pants. It just took me awhile to find the perfect size for me, but now that I know my size it makes it a lot easier to quickly buy a new pair. If I wasn't worried about my jeans being fitted I would wear a size 8. But remember, I want my jeans to be "loose" so I go with a size 10. The size 10 is loose around my thighs, and just fits without needing a belt {which is more than I can say for my F21 ones}. Of course, when I will be doing a lot of walking I will wear a belt, or if I haven't washed them yet 'cause they will stretch out with wear. Now the H&M ones can be very tight if you don't size up enough. Which means you might want to bring in a good number of different sizes in the dressing room when buying a pair for yourself.

Styling

Alright, I can't talk for every body type on how to wear skinny jeans modestly. You will need to experiment with a bunch of different tops, tunics, layering, etc... to find out what works for your body type, style, etc... But here are some ways that I enjoy wearing skinny jeans.

School Style

- Interesting top that is on the longer side {covers the rear}
- Oxford Flats (give a nice vintage vibe to any outfit)
- Keeping is simple on the bottom half, but keeping it interesting on the top. {This helps draw attention to the top half of you.}

Parisian Chic

- Short dress, or tunic {I like wearing skinny jeans, instead of leggings under these top of tops/dresses}
- Boots of any kind
- Belt around the tunic/dress {Gives definition to the waist}

Neutral & Girly

- Cardigan {Flowy & loose are my favorite}
- Tank {plain or decorative}
- Dainty Earrings

What are some of your favorite ways to wear skinny jeans?

  3. Thanks for this post! I was wondering, do you have any tips for getting pants that flatter pear-shaped bodies? I have a tiny waist and large hips, and I have the hardest time getting jeans that flatter me, and that I don't have to wear tunics with all the time! :P

  6. Great tips! I love wearing my skinnies with a long sweater and knee-high riding boots, or cuffed up with ankle booties and (large) dolman top. Skinny jeans are so versatile, no? ;D
