Gaby's Skincare | My Beauty Picks

Oily and acne prone skin is never fun. Add on top of that combination and extremely sensitive to any and most products and you have a hard time finding anything that works. Everyone’s skin is diverse, and what works for one might not work for another. That being said, I thought it might be a help to some of you to know what products I have found to work for my skin. I have battled moderate to slightly severe acne since I was about 15. I have tried many different face washes and moisturizers. The products I have listed before are the ones I have settled upon. (Although my face wash does switch up a bit in the hope to find the one that will really clear up my skin.)  Without any further ado, here are the current products I use on my face.

1. Coconut Oil - Let me just say that I absolutely love coconut oil. It is seriously the best. Whenever I am having a really bad breakout I reach for coconut oil. I lather it onto my skin and massage it all over. Then I massage my Yes to Grapefruit Exfoliator right on top, then rinse it all off with water. I also love coconut oil if my skin is really dry. I add just a little bit with my finger to the dry patch and let it do its work of moisturizing. I also use it as a body moisturizer after I shower.

2. Yes to Grapefruit Exfoliator - I cannot tell you how important exfoliating your face is. Now never, ever exfoliate more that three times a week. I did that once and I started to breakout even more. I usually exfoliate about twice a week. The Yes to Grapefruit is my favorite. The grapefruit is suppose to help lighten spots, so it is a double bonus.

3. Freeman Facial Clay Mask in Avocado & Oatmeal - When my face is feeling especially broken out I reach for this is calm it down. Apply a thin layer on the most troublesome spots and let it dry before removing it with a damp face towel. Remember to apply lots of moisturizer afterwards because it can be drying.

4. The Body Shop Tea Tree Cool and Creamy Wash - I haven’t had this for very long yet but I am really enjoying it. It is less drying that The Body Shop’s other tea tree face wash but accomplishes pretty much the same thing. If you don’t want to dish out the $12.50 that it costs The Body Shop has 50% off sales ALL OF THE TIME. I love it. But my bank account maybe not so much. Their body butters are to die for. (I really like the Shea butter.)

5. Clean & Clear Maximum Strength Acne Cream - The name pretty much describes the product, it does exactly that. All my sisters love the Clean & Clear acne spot treatments. I use the maximum strength. Just dab a little bit of cream on all your spots and/or where you normally have your breakouts and it should keep them in check. I nearly died and gone to heaven when I first used an acne cream. One reminder, never, ever ever  skip your moisturizer; especially when using ANY type of acne spot treatment [even if all natural or just tea tree oil and water]. All acne treatments are drying to the skin and if not properly hydrated and moisturized can cause dry and itchiness and even make your skin even more red. We need to keep that skin hydrated, girls. Okay? So drink that water and use your moisturizers.

6. Yes To Tomatoes Daily Balancing Moisturizer - This was one of the very first moisturizers I tried and have yet to find anything better. All the other moisturizers I’ve tried broke me out. I really loved the constancy and effect of the Boots No5 combination/oily night cream but my skin reacted to it by becoming red and itchy. But that is Ashley’s favorite and it does wonders for her. Even if you have oily skin never skip this step. Regularly moisturizing can actually keep you from becoming even more oily.

7. [not pictured] Yes To Coconuts Facial Wipes - I was was overjoyed when I found out Yes To, inc were going to release a coconut line. I was already in love with their Yes to Grapefruit and Cucumber facial wipes but when I tried the coconut wipes, I found them just that much better for my skin. These are for when you are so tired you just want to climb into bed and not worry about doing a full on wash. I also love these for traveling and when I come back from a hike or bike ride.

  1. Hi Gaby! Thanks so much for your skin care products list & tips! I have been using the Yes to Tomatoes daily scrub like they directed, every day, but since you said something about breaking out even more when you exfoliate daily, I may just have to try cutting back my use of it. Thanks so much for your tips, and we are definitely in the same boat as far as skin troubles goes :)

    1. I am glad you like the post, Charlotte. If using the scrub everyday keeps your skin clear then go for it. Everyone is different. I personally use it 3 to 4 times a week. xx Gaby

  3. Thanks Gabrielle! I battle with not only breakouts right before a big event, but also cold sores. (Which I treat with a special kind of medicine that the name escapes me.) I'll definably have to see I my store has some!-Abi

  4. Cool! I'm also glad to see coconut oil at the top of the list ;) I use it as my face wash and while my face certainly isn't perfectly clear, I do feel like my skin looks better than it once did when I used face washes that had a lot more chemicals in them! And I agree about the moisturizing. It bothers me when acne treatment places sell so many oil-stripping products, when all that does is cause the face to produce more oil--and more acne. :P

    1. Lavender oil for acne? I've never heard of that before. Where do you buy it at and how do you use it? I am always interested to experimenting. xx Gaby (Twitter @itsgaby94)

  7. Have to say, as an oily/dry skinned adult, coconut oil has been a real blessing. I love it so much. When I use it, it's generally in conjunction with witch hazel, and exfoliating cotton rounds from Meijer; then coconut oil to moisturize.

    1. Ah, yes, oil AND dry skin combined is the worst. But coconut oil really does work. xx Gaby
