Famous Classic Movies that I don't like. | Classic Movie May

When Kristin of Sew Technicolor mentioned she was going to do a classic movie blog event, I was all for it. Of course, when I got really busy I plain forgot all about the event, and then when I saw her post this morning (a rare thing for me lately) I knew I had to join in some of the fun since I had some free time today. Hence we have today's post on the classic movies that everyone seems to love, but me.
Singin' in the Rain (1952) Starring:: Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. -- I think I've only seen this film all the way twice (and that was only to show the movie to my siblings). I've seen the Donald O'Connor scenes a good number of times though, as they are the only part of the film I do enjoy watching. Once upon a time, there was a time in my movie watching that Gene Kelly was one of my favorite actors, but now I don't really care for him anymore. Not sure if it the really long dance numbers that he likes to do in his films, or it is the type of character he seems to always play -- which now gets on my nerves. Anyhow, this is one of those classic films that everyone seems to love but me.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Starring:: Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and Basil Rathbone. -- This is not one of my favorite Robin Hood adaptions (which btw, is my favorite English folklore storie), my favorite is the BBC TV show adaption and the Disney live action film with Richard Todd. Even though Robin Hood is always cocky (and Errol Flynn plays this type of role in every film he is in), I kinda see it as a front he puts up (which is obvious in the BBC adaption) to hid behind. So for some odd reason, I just can't get into this adaption not really sure why. I think I've only seen this film once.

An American in Paris (1951) Starring:: Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, and Oscar Levant. -- I saw this film several years ago, but I didn't watch it all the way through. I may, or may not have skip huge chunks of it, because I was kinda board with the film. Yeah, I think there are only five Gene Kelly movies that I do like that I've seen. I've also never seen the really long dance number at the end of this film, as I fast forward through it after awhile. Now, if it was Fred Astaire dancing, that would be a different story, I guess I don't like Gene Kelly's modern dancing style too much you could say.

My Fair Lady (1964) Starring:: Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. -- I've never seen this film all the way through, I saw about half of the film either last summer, or the one before and never felt the need to finish it. I love Audrey Hepburn & Rex Harrison in other films, but I couldn't get into this film. Now, I do love the songs, I Could Have Danced All Night, Why Can't the English Learn to Speak?, and The Rain in Spain -- other then that, I don't really care for this movie. This was just one of those classic films that everyone has seen, that I thought I should check out especially after visiting the Warner Brother Studios.

What are some classic films that everyone seems to love, but you? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I used to feel like a jerk when I would watch a great classic movie and hate it, like Citizen Kane...Rosebud? Seriously? Worst ending ever!

  2. Love My Fair Lady!

  3. Audrey Hepburn is always spectacular, but My Fair Lady goes on and on and *on*! Not one of my faves. I feel sort of like a jerk too, I mean these are classics for a reason...but still. A boring film is a boring film. I never could get all the way through Citizen Kane. :P

  4. Aw I like Singing in the Rain. But Gene Kelly can be kind of annoying so I understand. I also like My Fair Lady but my sister doesn't because she thinks Rex Harrison is a jerk. :)

I don't like Breakfast at Tiffany's, that's a really loved classic! I just think the plot was kind of dumb and sad. :)

  5. Nice post, Ashley! I've never seen any of these movies. I did see one clip from Singing in the Rain, and the voices were not good, so I didn't really care for it that much.

  6. "American in Paris" was a little strange, it's true. Have you seen Gene Kelly in "Brigadoon"? That's my all-time favorite. :)

    1. No, I haven't seen "Brigadoon" yet, but I would love to because Van Johnson is in it.

  7. Thanks so much for joining in with the blog party, Ashley! :)

I do love Singin' in the Rain...it's probably my favorite classic film. It's funny how people like certain actors or actresses- I adore Gene Kelly (he can do no wrong, in my opinion :), but I don't care for Donald O'Connor! I like The Adventures of Robin Hood and An American in Paris (though I think that one's a bit overrated).

And you've already read what I think about My Fair Lady. :) It seems that the general consensus is that the songs are great but Henry Higgins is a total jerk!

  8. Funny! I don't like Singing In The Rain, I've never seen that version of Robin Hood, An American In Paris was "eh" and I don't like My Fair Lady! So, I pretty much agree.

Also - it's been awhile since I've clicked over to the blog from Google Reader - pretty!

  9. Yes! I'm not the only one who didn't like "My Fair Lady"! I also don't like "Gone with the Wind"...most wasted four hours of my life, I think. Do you like "Anchors Aweigh"?

    1. I haven't seen "Gone with the Wind" yet, but I have feeling I won't like it. Yes, I adore "Anchors Aweigh" - it is one of the few Gene Kelly movies I do love (in fact, I love all the Sinatra & Kelly films).

    2. Thanks for this list. I had not heard of most of them. Now I need to get busy watching them, and deciding if I like them or not!

  12. Yes I must say My Fair Lady is a childhood favorite of mine even though it does go on and on and on. :) singing in the rain is also a classic and a favorite of mine because of the dancing and singing not because if the story line. It seems the best songs and dance numbers in movies and musicals emerge from the strangest story lines and longest durations. ;) I have not seen Robin Hood or An American in Paris to give an opinion. Great reviews! I definitely would love to see more movie reviews Ashley!

  13. I didn't like Breakfast At Tiffany's. I don't know what everyone likes about it. I do like Audrey Hepburn, and the acting was very good. I just didn't like the story.

  14. I think An American in Paris is really long. I love Singing in the Rain though and Gene Kelly for that matter. I used to not really like My Fair Lady but I saw it a few times and enjoyed the songs. . .I would have liked it MUCH MUCH better if Julie Andrews was cast since she was the one who made the role famous on stage with Rex Harrison BEFORE the movie was made. . . .but oh well. . .otherwise I like all these films that you said you didn't. haha.

  15. Singing in the Rain isn't a favorite of mine either. I loved it when I was younger but now that I watch it again, it just seems kind of cheesy and dark in some places (like the broadway sequence, ugh!). I do like some of the scenes with Donald O'Connor, and I like the singing in the rain dance, but other than that, the movie doesn't hold enough interest in me that makes me want to sit down and watch it.
I actually like the Robin Hood movie with Errol Flynn in it. It's entertaining enough, but I much prefer the television show starring Richard Greene. Now there's a good Robin Hood adaption! I may or may not be slightly crazy about it. ;) I've also seen the Disney adaption of Robin Hood and I prefer the Errol Flynn film over that one honestly. But it's a close call.
I've never seen An American in Paris, but I've seen some clips from it and don't intend to watch it. It just looks boring.
I didn't like My Fair Lady. I didn't watch it all the way through but it was long and kind of boring, and I didn't like the way her father acted. Yes, that was his character, but it just made me sick. So I never finished that one.
A couple of other films that I don't like are:
    Roberta
    Top Hat
    Follow the Fleet
    Funny Face
    The Wizard of Oz
    Meet Me in Saint Louise
    The Harvey Girls
I didn't really like the story lines in these films that much. There may have been a few funny or entertaining songs in them, but that seems to be my problem, I like the songs, but don't like the stories.

  16. I like and even love many old films. I do NOT like Breakfast at Tiffany's or Sabrina though. Which is so strange because I really like Audrey Hepburn. Roman Holiday is one of my all time favs though!

  17. Well, I probably should watch more, and I would know better, but I do NOT like "Gone With The Wind."
