In the Good Old Summertime {1949}

After the recommendation of one of our readers I taped In the Good Old Summertime {1949} off of TCM.  And today I watched it for the very first time. I loved it!

Starring Judy Garland & Van Johnson. In the Good Old Summertime {1949} is a musical remake of The Shop Around the Corner {1940} with James Stewart & Margaret Sullavan.  Can you believe it!?! They made a remake only nine years after the original.

It's the turn of the century America in Chicago when Andrew and Veronica first meet - by crashing into each other. They develop an instant and mutual dislike of each other right away. Which only grows when, later on, Andrew hire's Veronica as a saleslady at Oberkugen's music store. What they both don't know is, at night they both engage in an anonymous correspondence - with each other.  =)

For all you historical, or modern sewers out there. You will be excited to see a turn of the century sewing room. Plus, Judy has some really pretty clothes that she wears in the movie.

Also you can see Judy Garland's daughter in the closing scene. And she is the cutest thing ever! =)

    Have you seen Brigadoon with him and Gene Kelly? Super awesome movie, and I love the costumes.

  4. I love this movie, Judy's red and white dress is wonderful!
    *Gasp* How can you not have seen at least Singing in the Rain? Though I have to admit, Cosmo totally steals the show from Gene Kelley, at least for me!
    I second the idea to watch Brigadoon, it's lovely.=)

  6. I adore "In the Good Old Summertime"! It's one of my favorite old movies. :)

    You've never seen a Gene Kelly movie? You really should!! He's lovely. He's the most amazing dancer (I like him much better than Fred Astaire), he can sing, he can act, and he's handsome. He is such a happy, enthusiastic dancer that you can't help but smile when you watch him! I recommend "Singin' in the Rain" (it's my favorite musical and classic movie period). I also recommend "On the Town," "Anchors Aweigh," "Summer Stock," and "Brigadoon." Or about anything else he's in. :)

  7. Thank you for all the Gene Kelly movie recommendations, Kirstin! You want to know something else. I've never seen a Fred Astaire movie either. Now I want to go find a rock to hid under. =)

  9. This is a very funny movie! I love how funny Buster Keaton is with Mr. Oberkugen's violin ...

    Have you seen the dramatic (not comedy) version of this movie, "The Shop Around the Corner?" It stars Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It's very good, too.

    Have a great evening!

  12. I found this site for the first time today and I am so glad I did! I saw In The Good Old Summertime this past summer (haha) and loved it! I am a huge Judy Garland fan as well as a teenager. So glad to find birds of a feather --- thanks for the review!

  13. Also, you must see a Fred Astaire movie! I recommend the one he did with Judy Garland --- Easter Parade. The part was originally intended for Gene Kelly, but Gene broke his ankle in a silly way and begged his good friend Fred to come out of retirement so that MGM would forgive him (Gene) for his mistake. An amazing movie. Fred may not have Gene's looks, but his class and grace are beyond comparison!

    Holly - Welcome! Thank you, for the Gene Kelly movie recommendation. I will be on the look out for that movie. =)
